Abstract:[Background] As China’s urban development shifts from incremental expansion to stock-based renewal and quality improvement, urban parks have become a crucial component of organic urban regeneration and green infrastructure construction. They play an essential role in restoring fragmented urban ecological patches, enhancing spatial performance, and improving residents’ physical and mental well-being. However, current park renewal practices often rely on experience-based decision-making and lack systematic assessment tools to support evidence-based, sustainability-oriented interventions. Therefore, a comprehensive, operable assessment framework is needed to guide urban park upgrading toward long-term sustainable development. [Objective] This study aims to develop a sustainable urban park assessment framework based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to apply it to assess the sustainability performance of an urban park in China. Specifi cally, it seeks to (1) localize and translate the SDGs into an assessment indicator system suitable for Chinese urban parks, and (2) identify key sustainability strengths and weaknesses through a systematic weighting and scoring process, thereby providing scientifi c support for park renewal strategies in the context of urban regeneration. [Methods] A sustainability assessment indicator system was constructed based on the SDGs framework. By integrating interpretations of the SDGs, China’s urban park planning and management practices, and the functional characteristics of urban parks, the 17 SDGs were localized and matched to park sustainability requirements. As a result, a multidimensional indicator system with four dimensions—environmental sustainability, social sustainability, economic sustainability, and governance sustainability— was established, comprising 19 specifi c indicators. The study selected Fuzhou Jin’an Lake Park as the case study site. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used to determine each indicator’s weight through expert pairwise comparisons. We scored each indicator’s sustainability performance through fi eld observations and interviews with park management personnel, then calculated the overall sustainability score using a weighted aggregation method.[Results] The results indicate that Jin’an Lake Park achieved an overall sustainability score of 3.75 out of 5, which corresponds to a “good” sustainability level. At the dimensional level, the sustainability performance ranked as follows: economic dimension (4.37) > environmental dimension (3.87) > social dimension (3.75) > governance dimension (3.61). The economic dimension performed strongest, refl ecting the park’s relatively strong operational vitality and its ability to stimulate surrounding regional development. The environmental dimension also performed well, indicating that the park has achieved a favorable ecological foundation. The social dimension reached a relatively balanced level, suggesting that the park provides generally adequate public services and accessibility. However, the governance dimension scored comparatively lower, implying that improvements are still needed in areas such as public participation mechanisms. Overall, the results show that Jin’an Lake Park has established a relatively solid sustainability foundation, but further improvements are needed to achieve more resilient and inclusive, governance- oriented development. [Conclusion] This study proposes a sustainability assessment framework for urban parks from an SDGs perspective by translating global sustainability goals into a localized, measurable, and operable indicator system with 19 indicators across four dimensions. The assessment of Jin’an Lake Park verifi es the framework’s feasibility and applicability in the context of China’s urban renewal transition. The fi ndings suggest that urban park upgrading should not only focus on ecological improvement and facility provision but also emphasize governance optimization and long-term management capacity. The proposed framework provides practical assessment tools and decision-making references to promote sustainable urban park renewal, improve urban green space planning, enhance environmental quality in a targeted manner, and support high-quality sustainable urban development as well as residents’ health and well-being.
