Abstract:[Background] Under the context of urban stock renewal, urban construction has shifted toward a refi ned governance model centered on high-quality spatial improvement. The precise optimization of community public space quality has become a core requirement of contemporary urban regeneration practices. Nevertheless, existing public space evaluation tools fail to support classifi ed and adaptive assessment of diverse community public space nodes and cannot eff ectively support diff erentiated renewal and governance across multiple public space types, resulting in clear limitations in practical application. [Objective] To address the insuffi cient pertinence and poor operability of current public space evaluation systems, this study aims to develop a clearly classifi ed and well-structured community public space quality measurement system tailored for stockbased urban renewal. It establishes a complete technical framework that connects macroscopic regional screening with microscopic, single-space diagnosis. By unifying evaluation criteria and strategy-formulation logic for community public space renewal, this research aims to provide reliable data support and a scientifi c decision-making basis for refi ned governance of urban public spaces. [Methods] According to the characteristics of pedestrian-accessible public space nodes within the 15-minute community living circle, including spatial scale, attributes, and functional facility confi guration requirements, community public spaces are categorized into fi ve types. By optimizing and revising the classic Public Open Space Tool (POST), this study constructs a fi ve-type-oriented public space quality measurement matrix, namely the 5D-POST. Guided by four core dimensions including activity supply, environmental quality, convenience facilities, and spatial safety, the tool is hierarchically refi ned into 20 major categories, 36-42 medium categories, and 60-115 sub-categories of measurement indicators, forming a comprehensive,well-structured, and highly operable evaluation scale system. Two typical cases, Ruijin Community in Huangpu District and Yangpu Park in Shanghai, are selected to verify the eff ectiveness of the 5D-POST in two application scenarios: generating regional renewal planning strategies for multi-type spaces and transforming precise renewal measures for individual single spaces. [Results] The empirical results demonstrate that the 5D-POST scale presents robust applicability in diverse public space renewal scenarios. In the multi-type spatial scenario of Ruijin Community, the study systematically evaluates 19 public spaces across fi ve categories. Based on comprehensive score ranking and dimensional defi ciency diagnosis, a hierarchical and multi-dimensional renewal project database is established to support integrated regional renewal planning. In the single-space scenario of Yangpu Park, the targeted measurement methods of specifi c 5D-POST indicators for comprehensive parks are further clarifi ed and refi ned. The tool eff ectively forms a closed-loop transmission from regional overall screening to individual spatial diagnosis, realizing the seamless connection between regional hierarchical multi-dimensional renewal planning and precise measure transformation for single-space renewal. [Conclusion] The proposed 5D-POST scale serves as a convenient and eff ective quality measurement tool for the design and management of community public space renewal, constructing a unifi ed academic and technical paradigm between evaluation research and practical renewal design. It eff ectively links macroscopic regional planning with microscopic single-space renewal implementation. The innovative evaluation tool and methodological framework can provide actionable decision-making references and solid data support for compiling public space design lists, classifi ed and hierarchical renewal management, and precise quality improvement of urban public spaces under stock-oriented urban development.
