The wilderness, characterized by highly automated systems, embodies the most primitive natural features and holds significant importance in regulating urban climate and conserving biodiversity. However, the challenge of integrating wilderness into urban settings has become increasingly evident. This discussion explores the opportunities and challenges wilderness areas face in Chinese cities, proposing protection strategies and recommendations, and, first, strengthening the classification and protection of urban wilderness areas, categorizing them into four types, and proposing targeted protection and restoration strategies. Secondly, building a three-element interactive model of wilderness value identification behavior based on social cognitive theory, emphasizing the interaction among individuals, society, and the environment to shape wilderness value identification behavior and thirdly, enhancing wilderness corridor connectivity based on principles of landscape ecology, emphasizing the connectivity of coupled structure and function to achieve optimal ecosystem functioning and fourthly, enhancing the acceptance of wilderness in urban areas by improving accessibility, controlling the pathological distribution of wilderness landscapes, and establishing transitional zones to achieve a balance for sustainable coexistence between humans and nature. These strategies protect wilderness landscapes in urban areas to promote biodiversity’s benign development.
